SLS Raises Over 10 Million UGX to Strengthen Skills Development and Community Empowerment

The Executive Director, Kavulu Keneth and board Secretary David Kayongo receive a donation from Mercy Scouts International.

On 29th September 2023, Slum Life Survival (SLS) hosted a dynamic fundraising dinner in Kampala that brought together partners, champions, and community advocates committed to advancing transformative change in slum communities. The evening was more than a celebration, it was a powerful demonstration of collective purpose, shared responsibility, and unwavering commitment to sustainable empowerment.

A Milestone Achievement

Thanks to the generosity of supporters including CivSource Africa, Blessedheart, and Mercy Scouts. SLS successfully mobilized over 10 million Ugandan shillings. This milestone represents not just financial support, but a vote of confidence in the organization’s mission to uplift vulnerable communities through skills training and capacity building.

Transforming Lives Through Skills Development

The funds raised will directly enhance the Skills Training and Development Centre, a flagship initiative designed to equip youth with market-ready skills. By expanding learning spaces, procuring essential vocational equipment, and strengthening training programs, SLS is creating pathways for young people to transition from unemployment and uncertainty to meaningful livelihoods.

Practical skills such as tailoring, hairdressing, craft-making and entrepreneurship training will empower beneficiaries to generate income, support their families, and contribute to community resilience. These investments ensure that more young people can gain hands-on experience that translates into real opportunities in the job market.

Voices of Support

The Executive Director, Kavulu Keneth, speaks to the guests and partners gathered at the fundraising dinner to support youth empowerment initiatives.

Speaking at the event, SLS leadership emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving sustainable change:

“This achievement is a testament to what we can accomplish when communities, partners, and advocates come together. Every shilling raised is an investment in the future of our youth and the resilience of our communities.”

Representatives from partner organizations echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for continued collaboration to address systemic challenges faced by slum communities.
